LinuxQuestions.org Turns Twelve

I'm extremely proud to announce that exactly 12 years ago today I made my very first post at LQ, which served to introduce it to the web. As I've stated numerous times, since then LQ has exceeded my expectation in every way. 4,692,083 posts and nearly a half million members do not even begin to tell the story. The community and mod team that has grown here at LQ is truly amazing and something that I'm very proud to be a part of. I'd like to once again thank each and every LQ member for their participation, dedication and feedback. Without you guys, LQ quite simply wouldn't exist.

To say that feedback has been absolutely critical to our success is an understatement. With that in mind, I'd like to use this thread to collect as much feedback as possible about LQ. What are we doing well and where can we improve? What new features or sections would you like to see? What should we be doing differently? When giving your feedback, please remember that LQ will be updated to the next generation code platform in the very near future. To get a peek at what that platform will be like, please visit AndroidQuestions.org (as previously stated, the LQ color scheme will not be changing). Feedback on that site is very much welcome as well.

As part of our 12 year anniversary, we'll also be giving away some LQ Merchandise and a gratis pass for OSCON 2012. We'll also be randomly selecting posts from this thread and upgrading that member to "Contributing Member" status for one year. Stay tuned.

TobiSGD 06-25-2012 10:18 AM

Wow, twelve years. Happy birthday, LQ, and thanks for your great work, Jeremy.

Regarding feedback, actually at this time there is only one little thing I would appreciate to be able to do: make a search only in my subscribed threads. Sometimes I see a new thread where I think "Wait, I have seen an answer to that in one of the threads I replied to."
Being able to limit the search to those threads would make it much easier to find this posts.

weibullguy 06-25-2012 10:23 AM

Awesome and thanks to everyone who makes LQ the go to resource for solving your linux challenges.

honeybadger 06-25-2012 01:03 PM

Well done Jeremy. This has been _the_ website I stick on for hours together.
Thanks a lot for site :)

jefro 06-25-2012 05:11 PM

Kind of fitting too. I ask 12 year old kids for answers. They seem to know most of them. They have all day to look this stuff up. :)

I do have to say that there has been very few instances where a fight broke out. In almost all posts the replies are fair and friendly. Can't everyone be from Texas can they? I'd say this is one of the most friendly sites I have even visited. I said this earlier too. You never know when a quiet member offers a knockout answer. Really some smart people lurk here.

rich_c 06-25-2012 05:32 PM

Happy 12th LQ! This site and all it's members have proven to be a fantastic resource over the years. I hope I've made a small contribution to the wealth of knowledge and experience to be found here.

roreilly 06-25-2012 07:43 PM

Congratulations on 12 years. You have provided an excellent service to the community.
I have always enjoyed coming to linuxquestions when in need.

frankbell 06-25-2012 09:11 PM

Woo-Hoo!

Thanks for all the help over the years.

towheedm 06-25-2012 10:07 PM

Let's all sing

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear LQ
Happy birthday to you.
(Jeremy blows out the candles)

Hey Jeremy, let us know how the cake tastes.:)

As a fairly new member here, I must say, I've never ask a question that was not answered intelligently. You guys here sure knows your Linux and I hope to learn so much more from you.

I agree with TobiSGD and must say it sure would be nice if multi-quoting in a reply was implemented. A 'View all Threads for Today' in the Quick Links would also be nice.

Thanks for all I've learned here and let's go for 12 more years.

PhoenixAndThor 06-25-2012 10:24 PM

Yeah, whenever I'm stuck, a quick search on LQ usually points me to some great information. Forget 12 more years, lets keep LQ up as long as humanly possible :)

Also, I take back what I said about the boxy layout, it's an aquired taste XD Anyway, Happy Birthday LQ! You'll always have a spot in my bookmarks folder and a command in my DWM config.h

-shem- 06-25-2012 11:30 PM

Even though this is my first post here and I only recently became a member, LQo has helped me countless times in previous 4-5 years.

Thanks and congratulations! :)

goatknot7 06-26-2012 01:10 AM

I'm also a new member and have used LQ numerous times for information. Thank you for all the great information and happy 12th anniversary.

Regarding feedback: I love the tutorials; I've learned a lot from them.

catkin 06-26-2012 02:51 AM

One useful change -- more for the members than the administrators -- would be to develop the LQ WIKI. Instead of answering a frequently asked question directly in the thread, write the answer in the WIKI and answer the thread with a link to it.

brianL 06-26-2012 04:05 AM

All together now:
Happy Birthday, LQ!
Happy Birthday, LQ!
You'll soon be a teenager,
Happy Birthday, LQ!!!

Same for me :) Great website. I've been a part of, and kicked out of, several other Linux communities (mostly drama and politics related). I stick with LQ because there's no BS. A great website which touches just about everything.

vikas027 06-28-2012 08:34 AM

Jeremy, I my owe all my success in field of Linux to you, this forum and all its members. Whenever, I got stuck in a problem and found myself in a difficult situation, I knew that I have 'friends' in LQ who could solve my problem swiftly.

Cheers to you and everyone around !!

jefro 06-28-2012 04:04 PM

Almost would like to see some page(s), maybe an index sort of page that maybe a few could edit that held all sorts of useful items and maybe a write up like a dictionary.

For example.

dd could have tag words like bit by bit and clone and copy

Then when you mouse over it the phrase might be like command line tool used to copy blaa blaa.

It would be a place where I might go to say darn it, I sort of know what I want to tell the person, lemme look here for some tags. Oh, that is what I want.

I know that is confusing but you might get the idea.

nobuntu 07-01-2012 07:55 PM

Happy 12th, LQ! :)

king2000 07-02-2012 01:19 PM

happy birthday Jeremy, its a pleasure salute you and expres to you this congratulation. and i hope lq going on forever.

Hungry ghost 07-02-2012 05:19 PM

Congratulations to Jeremy, the staff and LQ on the 12th anniversary! Like many other members, I've found the solution to my Linux issues here countless times. And though I'm far from being a expert, I always try to put my two cents in whenever I can.

As for new features, I agree with towheedm that we need multi-quoting (but maybe that's already in the new, upcoming platform?)

Cheers.

jkirchner 07-02-2012 08:29 PM

Happy Birthday LQ!!!

I have learned so much from the postings on this site; it has really helped me learn so much. Great community and a superb resource!!

Thanks and happy 12th year Birthday

As long as people talk to people it'll be ok. I have had the priviledge of getting help from a professor from India, a russian person, etc. etc. WOW. International forum. The Dream.

obstinatesod 07-03-2012 03:00 AM

Happy Birthday LQ. Thanks for solving all my problems over the years. Well done to the guys behind the scenes.

Langjan 07-03-2012 03:33 AM

It's great to be a member of such a helpful community. I would have been totally lost without this support. I just find the login and registration processes confusing and complicated.

There also seems to be a confusing array of sites, some may be overlapping others so I don't really know which is what:
Launchpad
Ubuntu Forums
Ubuntu One
Keyring
Single sign-on
Linux questions

djemos 07-03-2012 04:04 AM

Happy birthday LQ

I am more of the perpetual lurker than a poster, but have gained a lot of valuable information here in the last two years or so.Happy 12'th and I wish you many more to come.

AlastairinWales 07-03-2012 07:06 AM

Your free offers apparently exclude many

Congratulations on your 12 years!

Your sponsor's offer of "A Newbie's Getting Started Guide To Linux", apparently, is NOT for the retired like me! Attempting to apply is rejected, as all commercial address 'fields' must be completed. Which is a pity. The file is digital and costs nothing to send. Would you include this fact that makeuseof.com (which pops up with offers in other places) has this exclusion? Offers, initially made by you, are invalidated. The 20 pages would have been useful to me. Others too.

lghizoni 07-03-2012 07:06 AM

Happy Birthday!! And thanks for all the help!!

I do agree with catkin about an LQ Wiki...also, maybe a subsection for newbies?? Most of non-linux users are affraid of the OS's because of wrong ideas that keep them away from the Linux world. A newbie area maybe would be a good idea to introduce those who entering in the Linux world.

Best regards!!

Didier Spaier 07-03-2012 07:24 AM

+1 for LQ wiki. A single login (LQ + LQ wiki login) would be great, too.

Also, I wish a post could be edited by its original author more than 5 days after posting, so that I can correct my mistakes when somebuddy notice it, even several weeks after posting. Otherwise my shame could last forever...

Oh and I almost forgot: congrats for this wonderful endeavor.

EDIT To give more visibility to the wiki, may be en entry for it could be added in upper horizontal menu bar. If there isn't enough room, it could replace either HCL or Articles as IMHO these are not very often viewed (maybe you can check that in the website stats) and last article was written in 2006. Of course the replaced entry in the upper horizontal menu bar would be present in the Main menu though. And maybe the Articles could be moved in a new Articles section of the wiki

Learned so much from LQ. What an amazing job. Thanks Jeremy.

Turns 12

Though I am just a babe in the Linux community, I have grown to love it. I switch distro's form time to time, just to learn something new.
I have watched (though I do not post) this forum for a few years. You guys have helped me many time with questions I did not know I had till I read the post.

Thank you LQ and all the Linux community..
You all rock.
Don

markyd 07-03-2012 08:16 AM

Congratulations! Although I am only a relatively new "contributor" to this forum I have used it as a guest, often after getting here via a Google search, it has been my forum of choice for Linux answers for many years and your hard work is appreciated. Enjoy,

MarkyD

manoj7410 07-03-2012 08:41 AM

I feel proud to be part of LQ.

Since I have started working with Linux.. LQ is my best team mate. Initially I was in state called " You don't know what you don't know ", but now " I know what I don't know ". LQ is the best.

I agree that getting more LQ forum members to participate at the wiki would be ideal. If anyone has specific suggestions on how we can accomplish this, please do start a new thread on the topic so we can discuss.

LDonegan 07-03-2012 09:40 AM

I have been puttering at Linux and reading as much as possible the help files. As where I live there is no place to purchase quality info upon Linux. So I rely upon those files to assist the best.

I do wish however there was say graphical representation of HOW to do certain tasks such as for example. Say on the how to do a simple Peer to Peer network or some automated application that would seek out say other computers on a network which are already networked together such as Windows platform.

I ask this because, I repair older machines to donate for youngsters upon the Indian Reservation to use at the community Lodge House they have. I help teach computer science to these young people to help broaden their skills within a already technology filled world. My personal background is upon the MS Windows platform. I do wish they had taught it while in college but such is life.

If this could happen it would go a very long way in the promotion of Linux instead of the MS Windows platform.

There are a number of tribal individuals I have donated computers specifically to college aged young Tribal kids to help them get a leg up before going to the University. So all the help in making Networking easy would truly help greatly.

Humbly

Almost forgot. I do want to wish all a happy anniversary of the Linux LQ community and 12 years is quite the anniversary to celebrate. Best wishes to one and all.

Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks. I don't use linuxquestions often. I usually run windows as a main OS. I do however "dabble" with linux (dabbled so much over the years my wife tells me I am far surpassed the "user" stage - although, that's her opinion not mine). Eitherway, linuxquestions is my "go to" site when I need help or when I meet someone else who does. I very rarely use another site to find answers after visiting this one.

So cheers to your 12th year and may you have many, many more.

John

BuckNekkid 07-03-2012 10:43 AM

"Thanks", ALL!

"Happy Birthday, LQ!"

With the exception of one individual jumping my stuff, I find that most everyone has been very helpful to this Old Man. :D

The thing that would help would be an Instalation Guide, with screen shots of the various distros. For those who don't have a neighborhood Guru, it's easy to get confused or lost.

Also, a section on how to install from a CD disk, or thumb drive if they don't happen to have a working CD drive. I
don't have a working CD drive but I have plenty of 'USB ports' for a thumb drive to work.

Oh, another thing that might be useful is a short explanaton of what each main component (i.e. Apache, Samba, etc) does
would be helpful in knowing what one would want to initalize to make it run.

A HUGE HUGG from this Cajun Cowboy to those who make LQ "pop", LOL! Yes, REAL MEN hug each other as a sign of "Thank You" (or at least where I'm from).

Respectfully submitted,
Regards,

Buck/KA5LQJ

I think the "My Activity" layout you now see at AQ is an improvement, but it's still not searchable. We'll keep that in mind for a future enhancement.

Multi-quote is supported, but we don't have any specific plans to enable it at this time. Based on feedback it's possible we'd change that.

12 years is Amazingly Outstanding.

Just in the last year the help that I have received from this forum has been great and troubleshooting issue were solved.

I appreciate this linuxquestions forum and all the efforts of the members that work to give solid advise.

It is my "landing" place if I have trouble and I'll try to be around as long possible.

This measure was implemented a little while back and we have no plans to revert it at this time. That said, if you need an older post edited, simply report the post with the desired changes and a mod can make the edit.
