LinuxQuestions.org Now Supports Tagging

I am happy to report that LinuxQuestions.org now fully supports tagging. This will allow you to classify your threads beyond just the hierarchical forum system. That's only the beginning of the power though. The tagging system allows all members to tag posts. This will allow us to harness the power of the LQ community to help classify and mark useful threads and posts. It will even allow you to find information faster. This is phase one of the tagging rollout - look out for more soon. As always your feedback and comments are encouraged. Thanks once again goes to david for his continued help on this.

Just to add - it may take a while to realize the full potential of something like this. One out of the box solution would be to use this to mark a post as a correct and full answer by using the special tag "answer", which is a feature I know a lot of members have been looking for.

I was about to post a thread asking about this, as I just noticed the boxes at the bottom of posts. Anyway, this sounds like it'll be an extremely useful feature :D.

One additional note. For now, please consider this feature beta. We encourage you to use it as much as possible, but do realize that it was just added and there might be a bug here or there (despite our testing before rolling this out). If you do run into a bug or have a feature request/suggestion, please post it in this thread. Thanks.

Seems pretty nifty, lets see how it takes off.. (:

Wait- Jeremy, let me see if I get this straight. Does this mean that we can go back through old threads and marked solved questions as solved, and then a filter could be applied to a search query?

Also, could we use tagging to vote for threads which should be stickies, or at least referenced to in a sticky thread for each forum?

Yes - if you tag a post you can then filter for those tags, whether it's answer, nvidia or whatever the tag is.

No. If you think something should be a sticky, report it to a mod for a decision.

These aren't voting methods, they are a way for members to further define a post outside of the forum name. So if, for example, you see a kernel thread which you think should also be tagged as "nvidia" for example, tag it and then anyone looking for nvidia info could see it. This only applies to individual posts, not whole threads.

KimVette 04-08-2006 04:46 PM

Can tags then be extended to support threads?

david_ross 04-08-2006 04:50 PM

Considering posts are contained within threads I'd say that tagging the first post is more or less the same as tagging a whole thread. In most instances the context the search is performed in will be threads as opposed to posts anyway.

KimVette 04-08-2006 05:21 PM

That solves that then. I was concerned that if someone tags the last post as "solved" when a user posts back saying "hey thanks guys, that solved the problem" then it might not turn up in the search results if say, "wi-fi" or "ndiswrapper" were the query.

it sounds great i like thye fact that i can sort of bookmark my forums

Is there going to be a way to remove tags, should we want to?

titanium_geek 04-09-2006 05:24 AM

I think that they are unobtrusive enough to not worry about turning off. You don't HAVE to tag or revoke your membership or anything. :)

a redesign of the box might be in order. ;) I understand it's only in beta- take it as a suggestionfor improvement. Why not "my" tags, because my username is long, giving a two lined box, which is kind of wierd. one line would be better. yeah. It's wierd looking. :)

This is for the people who say: "why not a server forum?" etc. we could even tag gentoo posts as such (as we don't have a gentoo forum, because they don't want one over here.)

I'm going to really play with this- any possible bugs, look out!

To delete - Just edit the tags, remove the ones you don't want and the save. Simple as that.
