At this link, you can now see the breakdown of donations from different distros (and a list of countries from which donations have been received). Ubuntu and Kubuntu users, tracked separately, have donated 4 times as much as the third place distro, Debian. Bully for them, but I would sure like to see Debian challenging. (Vroom!, Vroom!)
Hm, well I figure it's good publicity for Linux whether the car itself wins or loses. Publicity and advertising are IMNSHO two entirely different things. 'They' (whomever they are) say that bad publicity is better than no publicity, but whatever.. I say, "..advertising is by its very nature a skillfully mixed combination of falsification and embellishment intended to convince people to buy (into) a product that in many cases they neither need nor want...."
In reference to Linux, it being virtually 'free' OS to begin with, I call it publicity as opposed to advertising, and either way, it's a good thing; more people *would* likely want it, if they knew about it. They've got nothing to lose by trying it
It's just semantics anyway, and solely my own opinion I'm expressing here. ultimately, I'd love to see Tux win but just making an appearance is great on its own.
Go Linux!!!
Hopefully this will give Microsoft just enough time to get things in order before the Linux team can get their funding, sponsorship, team and all that in place! A major announcement by Microsoft just before the other guys should steal their thunder nicely!
So he's doing this why? Just to upstage Linux? Just because Microsoft has the money and they can??? Just because MS folks never have an original idea and prefer to steal from others?
What a fool. Surely if Microsoft were interested in sponsoring a car they would have done so by now? I mean, the point of Tux500 is to get the Linux logo seen by people who wouldn't normally get to see it - non-nerds and the like. Is there anyone who is really unaware of Microsoft?
And to steal the thunder correctly, the car would need to have the Windows logo only.
Thank you guys and gals for your support. Lord knows after the scamblitz we just endured we can use it. Rick if you see this, please email me at helios at lobby4linux spamfreeeeee dot com. I would like to talk to you about a couple of things.
it seems that /. is working overtime to avoid this. At least that's the way it seems. I know it has been posted multiple times by those other than me. I guess all we can do is keep trying but being one of the project leads, i really can't do it anymore. They will just write me off as a linkbaiter. I sure would appreicate it if some other folks submitted it though. We just broke the five digit barrier so that has some significance in itself.
By the way. Are there any French-speaking members here? We really need a short press release translated into French but so far no one has come forward to volunteer. It is less than 500 words so it shouldnt be too much work (you know I didn't write it. 500 words just gets me around to talking about what it is supposed to be about.)
