Intel Graphic Drivers for Notebooks now opensource!
News:
The Intel Open Source Technology Center graphics team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of free software drivers for the IntelŽ 965 Express Chipset family graphics controller. These drivers include support for 2D and 3D graphics features for the newest generation Intel graphics architecture.
really got news, however the intel chipset still need to catchup ati and gforce.
Regards,
ks
Intel are not really in the market for high end and dedicated graphic cards, rather intergreated video chipsets on motherboards and notebooks etc. 2D desktop support wise though intel do a marvilous job at this.
This is great news, considering the laptop I use is Intel (i915GM). Hopefully now it will boost performance for a better Linux experience. This made my day!
Wow I just realized when the parent posted this, I need to check the News forum more often!
Yes, I just try using xgl in ubuntu with ati card. It's amazing!! however, currently it not able to play 3d game during running xgl. Hope 1 day intel chipset is good enough for us to play 3d game on top of xgl.
All of these hardware manufacturers ought to know that by opening up the source of their software, they'll sell more sand.
If they keep the envelope tightly sealed, they fight the usual pointless battle with others who are doing the same. But, if they open it up, well, there are a lot of engineers out there who are not on Intel's payroll, nor any of their competitors'. It ought to be obvious by now that open collaboration sells more sand.
