Is this something new? And what exactly does this mean? Im a little uncomfortable with the idea of MS owning Linux patents and letting us use it out of the goodness of their hearts.....

it's more patent stuff: mmmph. I really don't see the issue, also, patents are invalid if there is "prior art" - you can't patent a window, for instance, and then sue all the building companies for not paying you royalties...
