IBM unveils chips that mimic the human brain

http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/...ic-human-brain

Quote:
IBM has unveiled a new experimental computer chip that it says mimics the human brain in that it perceives, acts and even thinks.

It terms the machines built with these chips "cognitive computers", claiming that they are able to learn through experience, find patterns, generate ideas and understand the outcomes.
In building this new generation of chip, IBM combined principles of nanoscience, neuroscience and supercomputing.

It has been awarded $21m (12.7m) of new funding by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the next phase of the project, which it terms "Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics" (SyNAPSE).
... and the next phase after that, could it be called perhaps ... skynet ?

…aaaand cue debates about morality of AI, criminal responsibility of "malfunctioning" units, "machine equality", etc.

…and before someone chips in with some sarcastic comment about my "free will problem": I've pretty much sided with the determinists; there is no logical justification for "free will", no matter which way you slice it. I'm a fatalist and there's nothing you can do to turn me around ([troll]much as I hate being this way…but of course, it's better that I am this way, as it represents the truth, despite how much it pains me personally; "personal pain" is objectively meaningless…it doesn't matter…all part of the chain of causality [/troll]).

The article says nothing usefull about what the chip does or how it works. However, artificial neural network chips and sensors based these are already common place in industry. .
I say that 'thinking' machines are inevitable. But whether Hollywood Horror movies are even close to possible is another story!
