ive been using linux for 3 yrs now and i regret it why i never tried it before. now, i found it very entertaining when problems occur. i never give up until i solve the issue. so ive been jumping from forum to forum for days or months.

i already solved many problems in OSS in hardware compatibility. and learned that some hardware are not ready yet. going to this conference/convention would probably increase my knowledge in OSS. and share the knowledge gain in this meeting.

the problem is "IF" ever i win this raffle, i still cant go coz i have lots to do this months and next months and probably next... i am a programmer and im making a system for a client, which is still in documentation phase coz of a delay in approval of the client.

i am just writing here bcoz im bored in working the document. CHEERS!!!

Linux in the simplest user way
 

Hi everybody.
Its ok from Albania , i have learned linux (not all) for 2-3 months ago, in the begin i was very confus about it , because my friends telled me that the linux is the best system but is too hard to learn it... :)
First was true , but the second not ... now after 3 months i have my linux servers in fedora8 and suse 4.4 ,web server, ftp, mail etc , every thing was simple....
And i noticed everybody that linux is not difficult to learn , is the simplest very secured and stable system.

Path of my linux experience:
Red hat (college pc) I was having problem to install at home.
FreeBSD 5.1 I was having problem to install at home
Red hat (universite pc)
Gentoo Long ride but really learning full, but some stuff was still not working fn key and video output
Fedora 7 I start working with that nice piece.
Fedora 8 I work now with this one.
Fedora 9 I try the live cd...
Also Centos
......

1- At home, at work and with my gumstix.com!

How I contribute to the Open Source community:
1- By trying to use only open source applications at home and at work.
2- By giving feedback with questions and by encouraging the use of open source at home and at work.

Why I want to attend OSCON 2008:
1- Because it fit the path that I have draw for me.
2- Because I never been and never had the chance to go their.
3- Because I'm really curious to learn more and more from others.
4- Because it will give me a good reason to pay the plan from Montreal to OSCON, the hotel and then enjoy the show.

Conference should be free like open source. So if this time I could not make it, I hope some will record that knowledge.

I've got ~7 years Linux, run it desktop (Mandriva) & laptop (openSUSE), a backup laptop with PCLinuxOS. Please do select me for this OSCON - Lord knows, I've got the time... Oh, I've got a Win box too, I check it for updates about monthly is all...

Laid of from work, though still do some consulting work (Win, & Linux as clients require) just had spinal surgery a month+ back (complex, I'll spare you the details and precise long name), and conference walking would do me good! (working hard at rebuilding nerve functions again - walking is improving, slowly, as is sense of feel at hands - right now you wouldn't even want to try and read my signature!)

Seems I'm close enough to attend such an event (I'm in SoCal), have the time, for sure, and hopefully the finances. I regularly work hard at building Linux skills, though I'll admit it's more as a hobbyist.

Who you'd really want to attend would be my son - working on a masters in psychology, human factors - doing internships for NASA and a med firm, exposed to lots of *nix at NASA and elsewhere, though with Vista on his laptop - just the type of person we could use working in the Linux world (Lord know we could use some professional human factors focus - not that I'm 'whining' or anything like that). Plus it might just be what's needed to swing him away from this eViL Vista he plays with, works with, and claims to be a fan of (hard to believe, I expose him to good Linux everytime I see him, he's exposed to much good Linux 30-some hours a week with his internships, still *likes* his Vista... I can't figure it out!)

I guess I don't know what to say to convince anyone to pick me. I'm a college student (BSE in systems/control engineering with a minor in Comp-E) which means I'm broke.

I have been using gentoo for almost 4 years now. I'm currently working (summers) for a company that does QT consulting work. I also have personally created an open source project called QScribe that is to help support lightscribe drives on linux.(once I have a moderately stable alpha, it will be on sourceforge and if you're interested in pre-alpa testing, pm me)

I really want to go to OSCON so that I can get an even greater exposure to the open-source world.

Hello Everyone

This is Kartikeya i m an computer science engineering student. I have been working on opensource technology from last 3 years. php, apache are technologies on which i hv been working from last 3 yr.
from last year i have been quite interested in linux because of its seducing features which attracts a lot of many programmers like us.:)
I attended the Red Hat workshops and have been working on linux since then.

My plans after the engineering is to work on the linux rigorously and want to be a part of the group of people who will make linux a future OS i.e. the next generation OS.

Opensource technology have helped many of small level programmers like us to work on such a bigger projects and to be proud of being a part of these.
Thus opensource somehow motivates the inner instinct of the programmers like us to do something which is impossible and never done before unlike the very known Microsoft windows.

The OSCON conference 2008 will serve the similar purpose by making us aware of what happening in the world of opensource how we can work on it efficiently and will motivate us to put every inch of our efforts for that.

I dont knw if i ll be attending it or some other person but what i want to request is please let everyone on this forum know what points were discussed in the OSCON 2008, what plans they have made, what efforts can the entry level programmers like me can put in the opensource projects.
If possible show the video of the conference to all the forum persons.

I've been using FOSS since 1996. I teach a course on FOSS. I run a community site for FOSS use on our campus. I run Ubuntu and Debian on my home desktop, three work laptops, on 6 of my servers, a LTSP lab of 32 workstations, Maemo/Debian on the Nokia 770 and N810, MythTV, OpenWRT on a Linksys AP, Neuros OSD player for media access and recordings, Sugar + Fedora on my OLPC XO laptop, Agenda VR3 (anyone remember that one?) but I no longer use it, a web server on my Compaq iPAQ 3150, Nocat on a Wi-Fi segment, ...oh, and PhatBox in my car, which runs a Linux-based system for music. I think that does it for my use profile.

Well, I know that I will not be able to attend the conference since I live in India.
But then could not resist writing and responding for such a great contribution by LQ.
My best wishes to the person who wins it. I hope he/she gets to know more about the topic and move ahead in linux.
I am certainly not the eligible candidate. I have not done much of programming. I am a sys admin and manage linux servers mainly squid and sendmail. I have been doing this for living for around 3 years now.
I first came in contact with linux in 2002 and have been using it as my primary OS on desktops and servers both and have not seen to windows. But then this is nothing great and many of the people have not seen windows boot for a decade now and I feel happy for them and jealous too.
I just hope I continue to work with linux and someday learn programming to contribute to community in more than one ways. I have been giving out free medias to people who need it or want to try it and have organized some meets in college levels and also work for a LUG in the city and I am happy to contribute to linux which has given me so much more than a free and open source operating system.
I would like that whom so ever wins, please keep other members here up-to-date and if possible upload the videos of the conference. Will be more than happy to attend the conference on the web.
Wish I could be there. Had I been there would have certainly attended even without a free pass.

Hi. Awsome promotion you have going. I would certainly like to enter.
I've started my own company and work exclusively for it; using, promoting, maintaining and contributing to open-source software. What a great stance open-source is for furthering software development.

I'd like to go to OSCON and meet with other people building on a codebase and share ideas about best strategies and practices. My concentration would be learning about different training methods available for open-source, and "codeless developer" employment (the idea you can hire a non-programmer to maintain backend tasks of a website via web interface).

One wonderful piece of software I use is Drupal. After many released versions its a great example of modularization and furthering more and easy development based on an evolving core.

I like to use Centos 5 for a development environment which I have 2 servers of, running inside Microsoft's open-source Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. To maintain them it's easy using Virtualmin and Webmin open-source packages. I've also used Fedora and Apache2Triad for clients which are also excellent.

Cold LAMPin
 

I've been steady LAMPin since I was in college. PHP is the most powerful opensource tool around in my opinion (at least for web development). My boss in college was a big OS guy and we spearheaded a migration off MS SQL Server to Postgres. (LAPP?)

My first language was Java and I'm very curious to see what Sun does now that they have MySQL. I run a personal LAMP site as well as some JSP pages served up by Tomcat.

I use Joomla and osCommerce in my professional life. I find osCommerce to be an extremely powerful and customizable eCommerce solution and I try to write my custom jobs with the possibility of contributing them.

Of course I love Linux and browse the unanswered questions when I can. I hope someday to be able to answer one of them ;) This conference might help.

Haven't used open source for so long but i found myself getting to this site to find various solutions that i need based on open source. Am based in Kenya a country where open source sounds to be quite new. The ICT usage in our country and in Africa is expanding and due to various demands and constraints i have switched to open source particularly on server administration. Am currently on linux red hat but use Ubuntu on ma laptop. The short time I've used open source has really encouraged me and as an IT guy who has recently joined a local university IT Team i've sold the same idea to the ICT director who has devoted one computer lab for open source. This has helped since i have a strong team that is coming up in our campus. I find open source as our solution for the future. Due to this i welcome any conference that would expand our knowledge base. We could be slow but we are soon getting there.

I am a software engineer, and have been developing products running on Linux platform for the last 8 years. For the last 3 years Linux was my development environment. I cannot imagine doing my work without gdb, xemacs and valgrind. I introduced valgrind to my previous company, and introduced the boost library to my present company. Two of my home computers run Linux - I just installed the new release of Fedora Core on one them. I believe that open source is best possible way to create and maintain the highest quality software.
