Foxnews.com - Getting Started with Linux

Another mainstream media article about using Linux:

Quote:
Linux is hot again. In fact, there's never been a better time for Microsoft Windows users to give Linux a whirl.
The OS is more usable than ever, easier to install, and more compatible with PC hardware. It still helps to be somewhat tech-savvy to get the most out of Linux, but that's no longer a major requirement.

I saw this first in PC Magazine.

Also, I just picked up a UK "PC" mag, and it has several features on Linux. My sense is that the various tech editors know that Linux is here, but want to avoid being too much in front. Watch for the "snowball effect" as people randomly discover that they don't need to deal with King Kong.

Yes, the word is spreading. It's the thin (still very thin, though) end of the wedge. A long way to go yet. With favourable articles like that, GNU/Linux awareness will grow within the "average" computer-user community. Mind you, there are some GNU/Linux users who don't want it to become more popular - 'cos that would shatter their fragile elitist egos.

egos!!!! where?...
Seriously, The egos are mostly at the core technology layer--the application developers, kernel hackers + maybe some of the distro publishers. In the proprietary model, we never see these people.

What will "light the fire" for Linux is the packaging and marketing folks---and the press.

I was thinking of the "egos" on these forums, that look down on "user friendly" distros. You can almost hear them spitting on the ground as they type "Ubuntu". They want to remain part of a minority, set apart from the common herd (not the GNU Hurd ).
