A hackers gift, or why you shouldn't entrust your sensitive data to the cloud

This may be posted earlier, if not, please watch:

I suspect that, here in LQ, you are pretty much preaching to the choir, but the more this can be publicized, the greater chance it will do some good. I'm throwing it on my personal blog tomorrow.

Reasonably good video, a bit long tho.

You shouldn't entrust your data to anyone, nor your privacy, nor your security. Companies, govn'ts, and others are exploiting the fact most people are completely computer illiterate. People care about ease of use, features, and how many other people are using these services. The more illiterate people become, the more detached they are from what is really going on, the harder the hammer will fall on them when it hits the fan.

No one, and I mean no one cares about your privacy, your rights, your data. You have to, and if you don't then you will face the consequences. You don't need to be an expert, but you need to understand the basics of what to do and what not to do. I certainly never buy any wireless device except for a wifi card (and I never use it on an unsecured connection). Wireless keyboards, mice, etc are vulnerable, although the infrared or bluetooth is short range. I would never buy a device that connects to the internet for reasons of convenience.

What really concerns me now are routers. If you read slashdot you will see that many companies produce routers that have backdoors. One fix is, if your router supports it, switch to:
This is what I will do with my next router. My current one was provided by the ISP, and I don't see it on the list. Also make sure to turn of UPnP on your router, as this is a vulnerability.

Other than that, I have turned off all internet services. The only thing running is CUPS, but it doesn't accept external connections.
