As newbie this assessment of so many packages and applications will provide me with a roadmap of sorts.
Thanks again - heroic effort, unheralded, still deserves a toast or three.

Really, not a lot of difference from last year. vim is just that good.

I wonder what application video editing would fall into? My choice would have been, ffmpeg. But then it would depend on what type of video editing is to be done.

Great job! Glad to know so many my favorites are on this list. No surprise with VIM. It is the text editor nonpareil. I'm a trial lawyer, and I use it daily for my job and for all my side hacking efforts. I don't even need a separate IDE, like Eclipse. I built my development environment right in VIM. Of course, the rare times when I use an IDE, I like Code::Blocks.

Its good to see the results of this years poll but still in India the awareness about Linux and its usage is lagging, how many Indian users voted in this?

I think this would be a better way for votes to count if some can win with <40% of the votes.
