What about Kubuntu, then?
I know is some other distro's family, but it's KDE, nice, and with some codecs.
There are other distros with KDE that include codecs, perhaps in the RPM family Mandriva, Mageia, PCLinuxOS can be helpful.

Now I feel happy 'cause I use most of the applications (except mongodb, pidgin android and games) that got the highest number of votes.
I use 'irssi' and in db section I use gdbm (sometimes berkeley db).
There should have been a competition between clang and gcc (doesn't matter whether clang is a wrapper or not). I like 'n use gcc.

Same thing that makes this pole both useless and interesting at the same time. :D

Slack should have been the No. 1 -- all we need to tweak the limits.
Are server distros coming from far away galaxies?

Ryupower 02-24-2013 08:22 PM

Too few people know about MariaDB even as distributions are starting to default to it?

Looks like the tide is turning though...
Is it time for Oracle to donate MySQL to Apache? on ZDNet

So we have a large segment of KDE using Slackers. Why the hell did I leave?

*cough* well then, hello. I've come back after 10.1.
It's been a long time.

brainvision 03-02-2013 04:51 AM

yahhuu!! Slackware number 1! ;)

prushik 03-09-2013 10:31 AM

Why don't we have a Package Management category?

Also, somebody should base a new distro on Slackware including all the winning software. Just for fun, see if it becomes the most popular distro.

Notice that Gnome is no longer the desktop environment of choice

I remember for several years that Gnome was the Desktop environment that won this survey. That seems to have been ceded to KDE because the Gnome guys
"broke" it by being Tablet and App fan-boys. Ever since Gnome became annoying, I have used XFCE (like Linus) when not at the command line.

While there maybe a decline in users of Gnome because of the design decisions the developers made I would think that larger influence on these numbers comes from the fact that Gnome isn't anymore the default desktop on the most used distro out there, Ubuntu.

Yes this is helpful to everyone. Many many thanks for the authore

bloody 03-15-2013 04:42 AM

Konsole huh? How come...

Any KDE user ever tried anything else? Like ... Terminator?

Debian: well it's not a 'fanboy' issue. It's the #1 most-used distro for servers worldwide, see: http://w3techs.com/technologies/hist...tails/os-linux

vim? Oh Jesus... must be all these Slackware guys who voted for this one. :P

Games: obviously spanning over too many genres to be conclusive/useful in any way.

Rest seems reasonable. Congrats..

The runner ups

I'd love to see a listing of the first top ten in each category. Is it possible we could see that list? Distrowatch only gives the top desktop distro being downloaded but does nothing for any application.

It would help a lot of people who wish to find good open source games or office aps if we had that list.

Thanks very much for having this website! pcm
