Can we have a System Monitoring app of the year category?

jeremy 12-19-2007 08:52 PM

A "Network Monitoring and Management Application of the Year" sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the feedback.

Desktop Publishing Work Flow Application of the year?

This could include graphics apps, DTP apps, editors, viewers, etc. I would suggest Scribus, Kpdf, GIMP, Inkscape, LittleCMS for starters.

penguiniator, most of those are included in our Graphics Application of the Year poll.

Best Moderator/Member of the year?

Well, mail clients are already covered, so...why not open source MTA of the year? (postfix, qmail, exim and sendmail)

Hmm, this could turn very messy, very quickly... ;)

The MTA poll was dropped a couple years ago due to lack of interest.

Did the same thing happen to the Best Moderator/Member of the year poll?

jeremy 12-25-2007 07:52 PM

There never was a Best Moderator/Member of the year poll.

Perhaps the games category could be split into "3d games" and "classic games" so you wouldn't have to directly compare games such as Nexuiz and PyChess directly.

Sorry for a stupid question, but on what merits are we actually voting? Are we voting on which application we think is the best for the said category or are we voting on which one made the most progress/advancement during 2007? I don't use or care much for KDE, but I think it made more advancements this year than the other desktop environments.

The reason I ask is because although application X might be better than application Y, it would seem odd to declare X the winner if it hasn't been updated since 2005 while Y is has almost caught up with a great amount of progress through the year. "Category of the year" seems to imply that a project made some great advancement in that year more so than simply picking our favorite.

Most people will be voting for what they like best more than most improved or Best Year Ever. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be most improved but I don't think it would make any difference anywho.

I guess there could be a category for "Most advancing application of the year".

A "Most innovative application of the year" category would also be nice, but I guess it will be a little hard doing the nomination for such categories.
