ZynsubFx audio cracks and crackles

I have onboard audio with my gigabyte 970a-d3, however, i don't think it's a driver problem, as I can play mp3 files fine, and in testing the file i recorded in windows, the crackles werent recorded to file either.

edit to add: I also found the linux driver on realtek's website and installed it

Well, that doesnt seem like it fixed the problem. i followed the instructions @ http://www.jeffsplace.net/node/12 however jack immediately begins reporting drops, and the symptom still persists.

In the meantime, i'm going to go ahead and undo those instructions, any other ideas?
