yum-updatesd daemon does nothing

I'm running Fedora Core 6 and I have a problem with the yum update daemon [yum-updatesd].
When I update my system manually with the following command it works fine:

# yum update

yum does only ask me to press y for downloading all packages

But the yum update daemon yum-updatesd does nothing.
I give the following command:

#service yum-updatesd start

and my system says

Starting yum-updatesd: [ OK ]

But when I check my processlist there is no yum-updatesd process!

#ps -ef |grep yum

root 24902 24841 0 21:00 pts/1 00:00:00 grep yum

I can not find anything about the problem in all of my logs .. and a google search didn't help me either

Does anyone know something about this?

I want the yum-updatesd deamon to work but if somebody knows a working cron command I'm happy too

When yum checks for updates, it looks at the time stamp (date) of the lists at the repositories sites, if you already have the latest lists and updates have been applied, there is nothing for it to do.
In KDE, if you go to main menu/system/services and scroll down to the bottom of the list and check to see if there is a check mark next to "yum-updatesd", if not, put one and hit "Save" at the top, yum-updatesd will always be on and as soon as there are new updates it will act.

The problem I described is there anytime. Also when there are many updates ...

I have no X. Only Shell.
With the command 'ntsysv' you can 'turn on' services.
The service 'yum-updatesd' is 'on'.

As I said 'nothing happens' ..
