Yum updater running slow

Hi,
I just updated to Fedora 6 and I wanted to run the updater for my system. I ran the gui program "software updater" and it launched successfully after I cleared the lock file. However, it sits on the barscreen saying looking for update packages forever. If I drag any window over the update it greys out like its working hard but seems to be doing nothing at all.
Also, I quit the program and tried using yum -y update. When I do that I get the command line that says Loading "installonlyn" plugin . This also appears to take forever. I am curious as to whether this is typical or if something I have is messed up. I've been waiting for over and hour and I don't know if that is correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
~Mark

There have been times on my FC6 that this happens, if after ten minutes it is still in that state, I usually re-boot to get it working properly, without re-boot, it will do that time & time again. On my system, it appears to be a screen saver issue probably due to nvidia graphics card drivers. Since applying last kernel update 2.6.19-1.2895.fc6 and corresponding nvidia & X11-xorg-drv, the problem appears to not happen any more. But I have seen the scan take as long as ten minutes (more or less) and it eventually produced a list. Sometimes depends if something else is using resources like surfing on the web at the same time.

Possibly power saving settings having an effect also, in respect to time set for turning off monitor, this is just speculation.
