Yum is not working in Scientific Linux Cern 3.4.6

Hi iam using Scientific Linux version 2.6.9-67.EL.cernsmp (root@lxcert-i386) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-9)) #1 SMP Wed Nov 21 16:22:33 CET 2007. I want to install PIDGIN latest version. For that i have downloaded pidgin gpg key manuallu from
Code:
http://rpm.pidgin.im/rhel/4/$ARCH
and import.
Then i downloaded pidgin.repo and save it in /etc/yum.repos.d/

Then when i type
Code:
yum install pidgin

to install it .The following error message comesout:
Code:
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Loading "kernel-module" plugin
Loading "changelog" plugin
Loading "protectbase" plugin
Loading "tsflags" plugin
Loading "versionlock" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/i386/yum/extras/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: slc4-extra
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from slc4-extra: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from slc4-extra: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
Can anybody help me how to solve this error or how to install pidgin ?Thanks in advance.

Hi,

First thing to check is if the mirror still exists/works - I suspect its a mirror problem as this error usually indicates a 404 error.

Also post the output of

Code:
# cat /etc/resolv.conf
If it isn't an issue with the repo itself, I suspect you don't have your DNS specified correctly which would result in the above.

Well, no file 'repomd.xml' in any repodata/ for the moment.
Just check for yourself :
http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/i386/yum/extras/
http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/i386/extras/RPMS/
http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc48/extras/i386/RPMS/
http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/updates/i386/RPMS/

May be ask them http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/scientific4/
.. Should be supported at least until Oct. 2010.

Pidgin repo

baseurl=http://rpm.pidgin.im/rhel/4/i386/

... seems to be OK.
But it may depend on the other repos.
