Yum error after yum update and reboot

this is the error I get when I want to use yum (Fedora 16 on Acer Aspire One netbook) :

Seeing as Fedora 16 is past it's End Of Life there have been NO updates for the past 5 months
-- there is nothing to update

this looks like a Python error
did you by change replace the old version of python ( the version in the old fedora 16 repo IS REQUIRED !!!! for yum to work) ,with a newer version ?

As in bypassing yum to install a different version of Python

with Fedora 19 now out

Time to upgrade

back up important data
and reformat the drives ( ext4 ,or LVM using the f19 installer )and do a new clean install using Fedora 19

This is a clean install on a Acer Aspire One netbook.

Fedora 17, 18 and 19 don't work on this netbook.

I just did a clean install, and then a yum update.

I did do nothing with Python or anything else...

Have you tried removing yum and re-installing it from the Fedora DVD/ISO?

just how little ram is in this ?

it is VERY advisable NOT to run and use a unsupported operating system

You might be able to install lxde on this netbook
if it is to old it will not be able to run Gnome3
Gnome 3 requires 3d hardware


fedora 19 with a lightweight DE might work

the ones you installed 5 months ago were the VERY LAST

Can someone please define this "un-supported" OS definition, yes I understand it does not have the latest security patches / bugs related to the system and would have more problems as it's not the latest, however at the end of the day we come to this forum for support, or we support it ourselves.

These are not PAID supported systems unless I am missing something?

He is clearly running Fedora 16 not 18 because he has an old system, and is aware that it's end of life, however he just wants to try to get his system working?

Do we need another person to chime in and let us all know it's unsupported when we are the support system?

Well there have been multiple posts to upgrade his system to the latest Fedora so I will pay that, your right it might not be the system, it could be something else so I apologize for my assumption.

However, it's not a paid supported system, so even though it's outdated and not "supported" system, at the end of the day the community is the support if not the enduser itself.

So the understanding of a supported system is still a grey area, when you could have the latest system, which is supported, however we rely on each other as the support and if nobody replied to assist the problem then it's unsupported yet somehow supported.

So there is no real guarantee of support hence why there are multiple systems with multiple outdated versions and everyone has a stab to get it working. If this was the case I would just go from thread to thread saying unsupported.

Fedora 18 gave me black screen after I start up the installation process.

I use KDE because I know Gnome does not work properly or at all.

I just want a working Fedora version. Whether it has the latest updates is not so important. Although I might have to change my opinion.

I need to install "javaw".

Because The Fedora Project no longer supports fc16 that makes it practically impossible for OP to have what he needs to get the netbook updated and get the commandline utility doing it's job again.

If it is an older computer older hardware can be very hard to find drivers for.

The fact that FC17 and FC18 both gave you a black screen after the installation may be an indication that the graphics card might be on it's way out. (My old laptop kept giving me a black screen at bootup after fresh install's and would lock up)

Gnome (especially Ubuntu and Xubuntu) is heavy for a DE but KDE if I am not mistaken is considerably lighter.

You can try installing yum but I don't know if that's the answer

without seeing the xorg log for fedora 17 or 18
this looks like the normal everyday vga / graphics issues that fedora is having

A bug that can be fixed with an edit to the bootline

also without knowing the specs of this "netbook" it is hard to say

However
KDE4 and Gnome3 NEED A LOT of system ram at least 1 gig and a recommended 2 gig RAM as a minimum ( 4 to 8 gig is a good start)

a "netbook" by definition is SMALL and has VERY LOW amount of resources , is considered an "Appliance" like a toaster .
and it is primarily meant for reading web pages and playing "MineSweeper"

it NEEDS to have a "LightWeight" distro installed
one designed for a "netbook"

a current OS like Mint lxde ( using the lxde desktop) might be a good choice

I do not know the amount of RAM
nor what the cpu is , or if it has a built in gpu

Fedora is a Research and Development distro
and one that is VERY VERY fast passed
( if you thing firefox is moving way too fast , that is nothing compared fedora )

gnome3 in fedora 18 and the current fedora 19 works G R E A T

but is works and a lot of people like it
