Yum does not work

Am at my wit's end here trying to install samba through yum (or any way for that matter.)

anything I do through yum results in a time out message...

root@LinuxFC91 ~]# yum install samba
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Could not retrieve mirrorlist error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')>
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: updates. Please verify its path and try again

The Add/Remove Programmes application doesn't seem to work either. Maybe related?

I'm sorry, but I don't know very much about Linux at all, so really simple to understand instructions would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Downloading the Samba RPM package from the redhat servers should work even behind a proxy. Then run 'rpm -i <packagename>'. That will do the job.
One possible mirror for RPM packages is
