RHN support will be disabled.
1. register (& pay) with RH

OR

2. replace system with Centos (free version of RHEL)

In either case, do not just download random rpms off the net and expect them to work.
If the RHEL/Centos repos don't have what you want, try EPEL repo.

If you HAVE to go elsewhere, you'll need to create a repo entry; google createrepo http://dotancohen.com/howto/yum_repo.html

this issue was something os related. First of all, i didnt put the "proxy=http://proxyserverort" line in the yum.conf file.
After adding this entry, there is no problem with the yum installation. I put the proxy entry in my .bashrc file.

The next i have installed pidgin through yum but it was not running. Then i googled that and came to know that the gstreamer and its relative rpms has to be updated. i did that. Now it works fine. Still this is the first time i am using pidgin. If anyone know about pidgin, i am greatful to get help from you.

May be these are all the small things but i learnt a lot.
