Yikes

I downloaded Ubuntu and I think it is 32 bit but wanted to be sure. So I searched for a way to see if the kernel is 32 or 64 bit and yikes, no real easy way. Meanwhile, I had to reboot three times because running Firefox froze my system.

Is there a way to tell what kernel I am using?
Is Firefox inherently unstable?

(Asus laptop with an M370 and 4GB of memory running Windows 7, 64bit)
