LinuxQuestions.org - Yet Another Samba Thread!!!

I am brand new to Linux and have installed Mandrake 10.

My setup looks like this...

LinuxBox <-- x-over cable --> Win2K Pro <~~ wireless pci ~~> ROUTER

I can get on the internet from the LinuxBox using ICS on the Win2K machine. I can ping the Win2K box from Linux and vice-versa.

I would like to get the LinuxBox on my home network as a file server.

As I understand it this means I need Samba.

I downloaded the most current version from samba.org which is 3.0.7. (When downloading the file you had to pick which version of Mandrake you were using and the highest version is 9.2 I however am running 10)I installed the package and everything went without a hitch.

To install i 'cd' into the source directory and run './configure', then 'make' then su 'make install' I have read many tutorials on installing samba and follow their instructions precisely and everytime the nmbd, smbd commands are not found.

However 'smbd', 'nmbd', 'winbindd' all return "COMMAND NOT FOUND" when used at the prompt.

I did a 'whereis smbd' and it returned '/usr/sbin/smbd' and 'whereis nmbd' returns '/usr/sbin/nmbd'

I know these files are installed...but how come i am unable to start the samba service?

If it makes any difference I can view the shares on my Win2K machine via SMB2K4 in Mandrake 10. But as I understand it this application isn't the part of Samba I need to be running to view the LinuxBox in Win2K's Network Neighborhood.
