Yet another printer problem.

Hi,

I know lots of people have asked printing question but I have yet another question to add to the mix. I am running SUSE 8.2. The printer is connected to my Windows 2000 machine and it works on that machine. I configured the printer from SUSE using YaST2 and going to the printer configuration. For all I know it seems like everything set up correctly but when i try to print it never makes it to the W2K machine. I believe they just sit in the queue on the Linux side because when I go to http://localhost:631 they are all listed on the active jobs page. When I check the queue of the 2k machine they never show up. Also, in my printers.conf file the URI path for the printer is set to
smb://john:print@192.168.0.4/HPDeskJ. This user, john, is set up on my windows 2k machine. However when i look at the installed printers under the Localhost admin tool it lists the URI path as only smb://192.168.0.4/HPDeskJ with the user name and password missing, maybe this is part of my problem? Well, I will include a cut and past of the printer setup as it is in my printers.conf file and the information that the Admin tool gives me. I would appreciate any help people can give me. I am still new to Linux so somewhat detailed instructions would be appreciated. I have spent a good portion of time on trying to get this working, with no luck, so I am now hoping that all of you can point me in the right direction. Here are the excerpts from my printers.conf and localhost admin tool.

An Update!

Well, I am sure that no one really cares, considering no one tried to help me in the first place. Oh, what a sad day for me. :( I figured however that I would mention I got my printer working and then tell what I did to get it working. Maybe it will help someone else. Anyway, like I said in the post above I was originally trying to use the YaST2 printer setup. I decided to abandon that idea by uninstalling all the printers it set up. Then I proceeded to use the KDE printer manager. For me, using SUSE 8.2, it is under the Start applications button, then System – Configuration – Printer Manager. When I set up my printer using this tool it worked without a problem. I would imagine that using http://localhost:631 and going to printers then add printer would have worked also. So anyone having a problem with YaST2, try using the KDE printer manager instead. If you get an error that states something about not being able to start the CUPS server then open a shell terminal as root and type “cupsd” no quotes and press enter. If that command worked you will not get any messages it will just bring up another shell prompt. Then try using Print Manager or the localhost address again. Print Manger also automatically detected my win2k machine and let me navigate to the shared printer, so that was a plus. YaST2 did not detect it automaticaly.

Remember, I am new to Linux I can’t say that this is going to work for anyone else. I am using SUSE Linux 8.2 and am printing to a HP Deskjet672C shared on a Windows 2000 machine.

Have a good one,
Tool
