I am not sure if you can get new gtk packages for Redhat 9 in rpm format since its now a discontinued distro and Redhat does not provide anymore updates for it. Maybe you would be better off giving Fedora Core a try since its the distro that replaced Redhat Linux.

If you can find an RPM for gaim (maybe from gaim.sourceforge.net for Redhat 9, try installing that since it can be used to access Yahoo and other IM services.

However, Gaim uses GTK as well. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try it, though ;)

also, you could try `centericq' (sp?), a textual multi-protocol IM app.

However, looking at the long term, reddazz is right: get an up-to-date (distro+version).

GAIM uses gtk 2.0 and not GTK 1.x, so if there is a Redhat 9 rpm for gaim it probably could work. Anyway using a newer distro causes less problems.
