XWindows Server Questions

I am interested in learning more about XWindows and how it works.

Eventually getting down to the code level and really understanding it.
Its how to get started I'm confused with I guess..

I can download the code and peer through it for days, but that won't really help.
Google it better but the amount of websites I get when googling is making it a little overwhelming. There is a lot out there. And what I do find just gives me more questions.
Honestly I have googled and have no idea where to start just the desire to learn and understand.

I would like to be able to jump out of the plane and get my 50K foot view and parachute down to the bottom (code).

I would perfer to get a solid and basic understanding before I enter the specific project forums and bothering people there.

Whats the best approach, is there a book, a CENTRAL website, what is a good place to start.

After googling, I have some initial questions.

for example:
Are there two or more "versions" of xwindow server? (I don’t really care about the closed source versions if there are any)

If so what are the differences.

I'm not talking about political differences in the projects, I don't want to start a rant :P. I am asking more about technical differences. Design structure code differences etc.

Is there a “light” server with a smaller code base to look at and get started with.

Thank for your help in advance, and prob after too.

There are many ways you can get started. I think the best way for you would be to find a good book. Look in
