Here is the issue:
Red Hat 5.0 (although this happens in Enterprise)

Right from the install, the when installing in GUI mode, the video goes screwy, IE, it starts to draw strange colors then dies. This happens on two laptops (Compaq) one old one brand new. I understand that Compaq is aware of the issue but thier bios patch does not seem to work or I am installing it incorrectly.
In any event, the error I get with Red Hat 5.0 when starting "X" is:

XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (and so on)

Above, this error which became entruncated, looked like it was trying to tell me something about the video card.

So, my question is:
Where to start to troubleshoot this, and how can I view the entire error on the screen?

I don't know is this is much help but...

Do you really need RedHat 5? It's VERY old and it may not function properly on newer hardware. Try to get another distro like Fedora, Debian or even Slackware. They are much newer and certainly will function much better.

Actually, I digress.
I just installed Enterprise 7 and it does the same thing.
I need to use it for work. The GUI really isn't necessary, but I felt that it would help me learn the system and it's functions.

What is the command to check the version? I seem to recall it is *something* with the -v argument.....

What I really want to do is mess with the Xsystems configuration file, but I don't known what to look for.

Try uname -a

And for the distro, try looking for a live cd. Put in your box and see if it runs, if yes, that might be the distro you need (find out what's the live cd is based upon). http://distrowatch.com is a good place to look.

According to "uname -v -r -s
I have:
Linux 2.4.7-10 (which I assume is Linux Enterprise)
However there is no mention of it at distrowatch.com
But it does exist on the net.

2.4.7-10 is only the kernel version. The version of the distro is somewhere in the /etc directory. And take a look what's written above the login promt in text mode.
