Question Xwindow won't launch

hi, here's as much as I know. first, Suse 10 runs under VMWare on a Windows XP box. things were okay for about a week. then i changed the time format using yasT and right after I couldn't launch X from the command line (startx, startx kde, etc.) I can't provide a copy of the command line output due to local setup but the important bits are:
(EE) Failed to load module "Keyboard" (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) VMWare (0): Failed to set up write-combining range (hex address)
(EE) xf 860OpenSerial: cannot open device /dev/mouse
no such file or directory

2 more warnings about the mouse and keyboard not working and then a notice to check the log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and a final error set:
XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer)on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed)with 0 events remaining

I've tried a few things to repair it (finally just uninstalled and reinstalled all files related to X11) but no go. being a total newbie i am lost on this one. btw, i'm not planning to run Linux on a VM forever, just vetting distros and trying to learn. so, having trashed my system (lol), i could use some advice thx!

I know its probably obvious, but make sure your not logged in as root when you try launching X-Windows.

lol, thanks for that. um (embarassed grimace)when I issue startx as a user (not root) I get:
Fatal server error:
Cannot move old log file ("/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.old"

I did install an ATI driver for the vid card near the same time as X went down, i guess i will remove it but I am still stuck with X.
