Xubuntu screen resolution problem and no net connection
 

Hey there, I'm very green when it comes to this Linux stuff so I thought the Newbie forum was the best place for this question.

I searched and searched the forums and Googled and can't find a resolution to this:

My computer at home does not have an internet connection. It is one of the reasons we are moving to Linux (Xubuntu), because Winblows keeps ruining our computers. Right now the blasted thing is so corrupt it automatically reboots after 15 seconds.

Anyway, the problem is this:

When I run Xubuntu from the CD, the screen resolutions don't work. There are only two options and neither work with the monitor. I learned this when I tried to install Xubuntu on my machine and could not see anything on the lower 1/4th of the screen.

How can I correct this problem without running a command that calls for connecting to the Internet? Everything I've seen alludes to typing a command containing a URL and I can't do that because I don't have a 'net connection.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide and please remember if you respond that I'm such a newbie that when I first logged in I searched for "version" instead of "distro" as I'd never even heard the word "distro" before. I don't know a darn thing about drivers, terminals, configs, or any technical stuff. That's why I got Xubuntu instead of Slackware. :)

... but in your case I would check the options in the xorg.conf. This file is usually found in the /etc/X11.

There check the horizontal and vertical sync values and that you use correct display driver for your machine. "nv" for generic nvidia card for example.
