xstart error

I recently destroyed my RedHat installation because of some problems it had. I went with Slackware, and all was well untill I tried to run x. The error I get is error 104, which would lead me to believe that there is something wrong in xf86config. I lowered the settings and I still have the same problem. Looked up the error on xfree86 site, but that seemed to have been worthless. Do they actaully have documentation on all of the possible errors there anywhere? A search for "error 104" pulled up one e-mail someone sent asking a question with no reply. What I really want to know is, why didnt this happen when I set up Gentoo. That whole ordeal was a lot more rough than this was up untill this point.

The video card is a GeForce2 64MB if that helps. Doubt I would need a driver for somethign that old though. Thanks for any help.

Your GeForce will work with standard 'nv' driver (without acceleration; you can download NVidia driver with acceleration from nvidia.com).
More about the error should be on screen or in /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. Please post one of them.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

That is the error I got. I believe it said soemthing about no screens found. Can't say for sure as I am at work right now.

With previous installations of other distros I was never able to do better than 800x600 either, but this was not a problem when windows was on it. I lowered it to 800x600 but that had not worked.

So it looks you don't have X configured and the configuration is wrong. Please open /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) and post the following sections: Monitor, Device and Screen. Every section begins with
Section "sectionname"
