I'm installing from cd Red Hat v.7.1 to my self built system running on a Soyo system board w/Ali chipset and an AMD Athlon XP 1700 cpu and 656 Megs of RAM. I'm using an NVidia GeForce graphics card w/64M onboard RAM and an Envision En770e monitor listing a 50-60 Hz overall refresh rate. The install is apparently defaulting to an inappropriate power configuration for the monitor as there is no specific selection for that monitor while configuring the Xserver. The install also seems to want to default to a generic graphics card even though there is a specific selection for the NVidia GeForce card in the Xserver configuration. I have tried every combination imagineable in configuring the Xserver with no luck. The text mode is loading just fine but I want to be able to operate in both text and graphic modes. Anyone have any solid suggestions or solutions?

first of all, is there a very specific reason that you are using a version of redhat that is six years old an no longer supported?



Before you go any farther I would suggest you upgrade to a modern version of linux. If you want to stay with Redhat, then either go for Fedora core if you want bleeding edge, or CentOS if you want something nice and stable. CentOS is a clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux.


If you have good reason to use such a old distro, you REALLY better know what your doing, as there are probally some pretty serious exploits in a release that hasnt been supported in a long time. Also, you will find that the newer offerings are more user friendly anyway
