Ubuntu will install, and using bootpart i set up his boot.ini and bootsect.lnx...just like i did on my machine. But when NTloader brings up the OS choices choosing linux just makes the screen flicker and the OS choice menu comes back up. His main windows drive is an sata drive, and his linux drive is a HD on the secondary IDE channel by itself. I choose not to install grub to the MBR and installed GRUB to /dev/hdd1. Anyone have any ideas on why this won't work???

did you use
dd if=/dev/hdd1 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
I just set up XP/SuSE/Ubuntu/UWoody
you can boot from a rescue disk to recreate the bootsect.lnx file and then move it to a shared drive so you can copy it to a location (Fat partition ,floppy, USB key...) that XP can read it.
