XP PRO and Ubuntu Dual Boot Problem

ok guys i have XP Pro and Fedora Core 3 on my machine for awhile, worked great. Then i but ubuntu on and it worked great. All using the NTloader to boot linux. Then a friend of mine wanted to do the same so we got him a second hard drive and tried to get ubuntu to work. Ubuntu will install, and using bootpart i set up his boot.ini and bootsect.lnx...just like i did on my machine. But when NTloader brings up the OS choices choosing linux just makes the screen flicker and the OS choice menu comes back up. His main windows drive is an sata drive, and his linux drive is a HD on the secondary IDE channel by itself. I choose not to install grub to the MBR and installed GRUB to /dev/hdd1. Anyone have any ideas on why this won't work???

did you use
dd if=/dev/hdd1 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

I just set up XP/SuSE/Ubuntu/UWoody

you can boot from a rescue disk to recreate the bootsect.lnx file and then move it to a shared drive so you can copy it to a location (Fat partition ,floppy, USB key...) that XP can read it.

i didnt set up the boot part in linux, i did it in windows xp. XP is the default OS and after the install i can't get back into linux. I got the boosect.lnx using "Bootpart" its a program for windows that takes the first 512 bytes in windows and makes the bootsect.lnx and i put the right entry in the boot.ini in windows
