xp home/ubuntu partion sound problem
 

i have noticed previous threads wrote about no sound in ubuntu.

i have the reverse problem in the partition.
the ubuntu side has sound and the xp home side has no sound.
is ubuntu blocking the sound to xp.
if so would appreciate advice on correcting this problem

If you re-boot the system in XP there is no possible way Ubuntu is causing your windoze sound problem.

You will have to look into the sound problem in windoze. Look to see if there is a driver loaded, and make sure it is not muted, and the IRQ's are set up correctly. Look in the device manager and make sure there are no red marks on the sound device. If there are, you will have to find out why.

my xp control panel shows no audio device as being connected

but as to drivers, if ubuntu has a sound driver shouldn't this cover xp sound also

No, these two systems are different animals. The fact that one has a "driver" doesn't mean the other one has one. BTW, these things in linux are called 'modules', they can be loaded into a kernel with the command 'modprobe' or they can be included in a kernel when the kernel is compiled. ( Just a little background ).

This post is valid only if repainter has audio sound on his ubuntu. if he sees only a driver installed and no sound coming from the board there is probably no hard ware ( Which is hard to believ as even the cheapest boards provide on board audio or at least a PCI sound card ).If there is sound in ubuntu logically it would mean that there is hardware. As for painter trying to look for audio devices in control panel, I suggest he go to device manager. comntrol panel> system> (straightaway Device manger in win 98 and >Hardware >Device manager in win 2000,NT and XP).All versions of windows detect hardware whether a driver has been installed or not. If the driver is installed and the hardware is working and not disabled it will show up with a ( +) mark behind it. If it is not working it will show up with a red or yellow question mark. For further Diagnosis double click on it. it displays property window with the status. If the device is working it will say "this device is working properly." In that case the sound may have been muted in the task bar. The other possibilities or " Drivers have ot been installed for this device " or "This device has been disable " or, pay attention here " This device has an interrupt conflict" and it will show the conflicting IRQ device. In that case you will have to disable the other device. ( if it is not of importance to you.) As suggested, if yours is a dual boot system ubuntu configuration will not affect windows configurations. Have a try and tell us what music you listened to on your windows.

thanks for your comprehensive advice
i followed through and sure enough there was a yellow
question mark on my multimedia audio controller.

my board is adi 1886

i googled the device for driver
found it as an ibm reference
downloaded driver
still no sound
tried to find driver file in search of c storage and came up blank.

the driver, i presume, is some where in my system
where i have no idea
if i can locate it, i should be able to open it hopefully.

Repainter, As even after two days you have not reverted back I presume you have been able to sort out the issue. In case you still have the problem try this.
If yours is a branded computer ( any brand) and not assembled by somebody, it will invariably come with a " mother board installation" cd. This cd tells the operating system what are the hardware installed on the computer and how they are to be configured.
If you have this cd insert it in the cd drive after starting windows. In most cases the cd will auto run and install the software for all the devices.( this is neccessary because some drivers may not be available in the windows driver database, which though rare is possible.) If the driver does not automatically, navigate to properties window for the sound device and click "reinstll driver". The installation wizard will pop up.
select install driver automatically while the cd is still in the drive. .windows will check the cd also for drivers and it should definitely find the driver their. It will automatically instll the driver and lets you know that the driver is installed. In XP whenever a sound device is present and the device is active and has a driver, the volume control icon ( a brown speaker) will appear in the task bar (usually at the right corner). that is your confirmation that the sound device is OK. Further fine tuning can be done in he config sound device option in the control panel.
In case you do not have the "motherboard cd", try to open the cover of your pc ( dont be afraid, nothing is going to happen if you are careful) and see if you can idenrtify the manufacturer's name and model. This should be easily visible somewhere on the board ( printed). From thereon, it is just a matter of going to the manufacturers site and downloading the information. As for your question of finding drivers for the device, windows dtores itsinstalled driver database in a folder named i386 in WINDOWS folder. But this may not be of much use as you canot change anything here. There is also another folder in windows system 32 folder named driver. Again this also may not be of much use to you unless you know the specific hardware .
