Question XP dualboot whit RedHat 7.2

I have Win Xp on c:\ and Redhat 7.2 on /dev/hdc3.

I wan't to use the windowsdualboot to boot both Xp and RedHat. First I installed Redhat then XP.

When I installed Xp the grub bootloader disapeard. But what I really want is to use the Xp dualboot.

What parameter should I use? I'm a real newibe so plase be gentle.

Hmmm dual boot

I played with dual boot when trying to install Mandrake and 98se. After completely messing up one of my hard drives with fdisk, I decided to buy the Trios Hard Drive Selector. It let's you pick which hard drive you want to have as your C drive. The hard drives are totally independent of eachother. This has allowed me to perform all kinds of experiments while I'm learning linux, and at the same time keep my windows system secure.

So my advice is this, don't used software dual boot unless you absolutely have to. This hard drive selector thing saved me a huge headache and gave me the freedom to experiment. For only $50, I highly recommend it.

I am a newbie also and the only way i have had it work it using grub or lilo for dual boot. If you install xp first then red hat your should be fine. I dont know of a way to use xp dual boot menu with linux. For the reason windows doesnt recognize a linux partition as linux recognizes all file systems. I dont know why ya might be partial to using the xp menu but its no different and it doesnt work that i know of anyway. Hope that helps.! oh yeah and you might be able to use your linux boot disk to replace your grub bootloader! Just some thoughts!

I installed Win 2k then Win Xp and lastly RedHat Linux on my notebook. Trick to getting the Windows boot loader see Linux is to install Linux's boot in the 1st partition NOT the MBR. Upon reboot, put the Linux Install CD 1 and select the rescue mode then at the shell copy the linux boot sector from /boot to a file (dd if=/dev/hda7 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1). Next copy the bootsect.lnx file that you just created to a floppy. Get out of Linux and starts Windows as administrator, copy the bootsect.lnx to c:\ and lastly add c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux" to boot.ini. This will get the windows bootloader to see the linux boot loader and you're done.

Just remember... if you ever want to Dual Boot Windows and Linux, install Windows First. Otherwise, if you install Linux first it's boot loader (GRUB, LILO) get's overwritten by WinBlows Loader, unless that's what you want to happen! I'm just curious, why do you want to use XP's boot loader instead of GRUB?
