xorg: intel GMA 4500
 
hello guys,

I have low FPS in glxgears (~ 750) for my intel GMA 4500. Would you please check my configuration?

Today (25.11.2009) I updated kernel and xserver-xorg-video-intel to Debian-squeeze. Before I used lenny where I got only 350 FPS in glxgears. There is small performance improve but I thing is not enough.

It's not that clear, at least to me, what you're after. The xorg.conf is not much use for a full-on 3D desktop, if that helps??

Hi,

Idon`t need any 3D desktop like comiz... My problem is that my graphics card does not have performance as in windows. When I just scrolling in firefox (web pages with flash, banners and etc.) xorg use up to 75% of CPU (Intel pentium duo 2.8Ghz). than I did test with glxgears and I see only 750 FPS and I thing that is damn low. I also tryed army men with low resolution (800x600) and is not playable.

Any advice what should be wrong with my settings? Could somebody check my MTRR if is right? I`m using 4GB RAM with 256MB shared for integrated graphics card.

This is probably your issue. Try using the i915 driver instead of the "intel" driver.

Something that also may help with performance is the use of KMS which needs to be done at boot so you have to edit your bootloader and add i915.modeset=1 to the kernel parameters. Remove anything that says VGA=. This gives a noticeable gain in performance.

NOTE: Remember that KMS REQUIRES you have GEM so the only drivers that it currently works on is the i915 driver so make sure that this driver is the correct one for your hardware. I think "intel" just uses whatever it thinks is the right one. There is also talk that you don't need a xorg.conf file when using KMS but I am not certain of that quite yet.

I tried to use i915 but GDM failed on startup because it can`t load module i915. There is not any xserver-xorg-video-i915 package on debian...

Could you please give me more info how should look my grub loader?

Ooops mybad you are supposed to setup your xorg using the intel driver. You have to compile the kernel a certian way to get KMS and GEM working properly.

Your grub should look like this

This may or maynot work because I have never really used kernel parameters on a system with an initrd. To get better performance you may wanna consider recompiling the kernel. This is the only sure shot way to get KMS and GEM working properly. These are from the gentoo site on how to get KMS and GEM working correctly for my system in the kernel.
