xorg -configure doesn't detect my PS/2 mouse

Because my PS/2 mouse isn't seen I ran a test to see if my kernel was able to see it, I typed : cat /dev/input/mouse0 & cat /dev/input/mice. When I move the mouse I get a bunch of garbage characters.( I think that's a good thing.) So I updated the file to reflect the entries:

There were already default entries above these
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

So I next typed cp /root/ /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Last I typed "startx"...The screen went black and came back with a message: Fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices.
