xorg.conf problems

Ok, so I'm fairly new to Linux... I've been using it for years on school lab computers but never actually took the time to ever install it on one of my own machines.

Right now I'm trying to install fedora core 6 on an IBM thinkpad T41p.

The install went pretty smoothly (installed i686 core instead of i586) however I was having trouble getting dual head to work. As such I installed the ATI drivers in the livna repo... Still didn't help my dual head problem. So I started fiddling with the xorg.conf file to change the refresh rate of one of the monitors... Now when I start up, both monitors (laptop and external) go black when the x server starts up... it looks like the comp. is starting up properly but just not putting out anything to the monitor.

Is there anyway to halt the xserver startup so that I can change the xorg.conf file back to what it was before?

Your help is certainly appreciated!

You should be able to just hit CTL+ALT+F1 to get to a console.
