xorg.conf - - - > "out for scan range"
 

Hi there, thanks for your attention.

Following info found and SUSE configuration tools (Sax2)
I try to change my screen resolution from the default 1600x1200
to 1280x1024. Yet, Sax2 gives a fixed refresh-frequency option for
each resolution chosen and when I "test" the new configuration
I get "out of scan range". Is this error related to some specified
screen size which I need to change?
Any useful links please?

I try to figure out what kind of changes I need to implement
in the file below (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). I run depth 16.

... forgot to mention that my monitor now
seems to work with UXGA but only SXGA appears
available for 1280x1024. I like high res but
some fonts are too small to feel comfortable with.

Try remove all the modes bigger than 1280x1024.

Or just run xorgconfig and when it asks about monitor capabilities, try:
"Monitor that can do 1280x1024 @ (refresh)"

If this program overwrites xorg.conf I assume it's wise to make a backup of my current configuration.
Then, I can always go level 3 and put that backup back in place - please correct me if I'm wrong.
For the newbie Linux gives you a lot of pain, but who said I don't like that?

p.s. Currently is 105dpi and the actual screen size = 400x300mm.

Are you using NVidia 3D drivers by any chance?

Not really, Intel 865 G is what Dell supplies for Dimension 1100.
The monitor on the other hand weights about 35 Kgr but is superb :-)

If somebody is still looking here ...

I tried both ways and I always fall "out of scan range"
when I applied the changes. It is strange though that
Sax2 accepts happily 1600x1200, 800x600, 640x480
but NOT 1024x768 or 1280x1024. My monitor freq ranges
are quite wide and I do not think that this causes the
problem. I tried to change the aspect ration from 4/3
to 5/4 but this seems to be a passive setting.

Any further ideas/help are highly appreciated :o)


ps. One may wonder why I want to move to a lower resolution.
This is for compatibility with my School settings.
e.g. when I use VNC viewer the letters on the topbars
of the applications look too small because my monitor
is running at 105dpi instead of 72 or 96.
