xmms and grip

I have recently installed mandrake 7.2 without any hitches, the installation is only a couple of days old and I am having trouble opening xmms and my gnome cd ripping program Grip. Both open for a second and then disappear. While they are open they are unresponsive. I'm pretty new to Linux and would appreciate any help!
Thanks in advance, Steve.

Do you get an error message?

xmms

I too am running Mandrake-Linux 7.2. The problem I am having is that after working normally over the last couple of months suddenly I am unable to run xmms under root. I am able to get full functionality as a user, but it does not run under root. Neither do I get any error message. the visualisation plugin I had selected when it was working appears and then tends to hang. An even stranger problem I am having overall with Mandrake-Linux is that if I try uninstalling any packages through the package manager nothing happens. The removed packages remain where they were. GNORPM crashes.RPMDrake works at it and then when I check back the packages are still there.
Can anbody clue me in as to what is going on and how to solve this ?
Thanks
Ashraf

don;t run xmms as root. run it as a user.

as for the rpm thing, is there something that it depends on (removing it might upset something else). or maybe it's set to test. this will not actually remove the package, just tell you if you can.

Kindly bear with me. For taking so much of your time
Normally I am running xmms only as a user. I am just curious, why isn't it working under root?
The package manager rpmdrake shows me a list of packages to remove, in this case all the xmms packages,(no complaints about dependencies) and seems to be doin' something (the hdd light chugs away). At the end of which it stops and when I check for the packages again, lo and behold they are still there. Another related problem is the Mandrake-Linux Updater. This does not work. Same problem. Therefore I had to manually install the latest kernel i.e. 2.2.19 and so with some others too. A reason for the above problems ? In fact earlier I did not try any of the above and only after the kernel update am I trying all this !
My hardware config is as follows AMD K6-2 450 MHz, 128 MB RAM, ALI ALLADDIN M1543C/M1542 chipset board, Voodoo 3 16MB AGP VGA card. Seagate 10GB + 8 GB HDD's Linux is installed on the 8 GB slave hdd. I have LILO to dual boot Linux / Windows.
Thanks
Ashraf
