Xmms, permissions and playing cd's

I finally got my soundcard working! Played a normal music cd using xmms while logged on as root -. no problem. Then I logged out of root and onto my normal user account (that has been added to the audio group). As KDE loaded, I was treated to a nice little "log on" tune just to prove that the soundcard was working and that my user account had permission to use it. But I can't play a cd with xmms or with the KDE media player - when I try to add the cd trax to the playlist, it shows nothing...

I assume that there is a permission problem somewhere but I have no idea where to look. Of course, it may be something completely different Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

you could try

chmod /dev/cdrom 444

or whatever your device is called (maybe /dev/hdc)

You would also have to be a member of the cdrom group to access the cdrom as well as the audio. If this does not solve the problem I had to change the group on the /dev/sg* devices and make them read/write to the group as well to be able to use the CD it had been incorrectly set you may want to check for this as well.

You would use:
Code:
[12:00 AM Tue Sep 03: stephen @ ~]
>$ ls -la /dev/sg0
crw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 21, 0 2002-03-14 17:51 /dev/sg0

1. chmod g+rw /dev/sg*
2. chgrp cdrom /dev/sg*

Thanks guys

I tried your advice. I added my user to the group file and then did a chmod anf chgrp for the /dev/sg* and it worked a treat

Much obliged to you.

Cheers
Joe
