xmms not loading? :<

so, i finally have access to ntfs on all users (i was having an issue where only root could look at stuff, and it wouldnt let me chmod the folder of course), which i did so i could play all the music on my win hd, but now xmms isnt working

double clicking on the files does nothing
having the mouse over the file where it shows the playing thing does nothing
right clicking and doing "open with... x multimedia system" does nothing
trying to open the bin file does nothing

package is installed (checked)
soundcard was easily recognized and plays test sound no prob

i have no idea what is going on! :<
this happens in both root and user accounts, and i didnt see the process even open or anything when checking top

any suggestions are great,
thanks

Are you trying to play mp3's? RedHat removed all mp3 support from xmms:

If you are going to be encoding your own stuff, you might want to consider Ogg Vorbis
http://www.vorbis.com

This is a very good mp3 replacement. It's still early, though. It works great on a PC, but there really aren't any portable Ogg players, yet. There is some Palm OS stuff, though.

i installed the rpm, and of course it still doesnt want to work at all

should i try uninstalling the xmms package and putting it back on, and then reinstalling the rpm for mp3 plugin?
or should i try just upgrading xmms (assuming there is a new version)?

aah!

and i actually tried switching to ogg a year (or 2?) ago when i first heard of it
but i was still on windows, and downloading ogg files was just not really possible from p2p networks :\

is there an easy mp3 -> ogg converter that checks and maintains correct kbps? i have about 8k songs to convert, so hopefully it wouldnt be too crazy

There are a few things out there, perl scripts, etc. but I would recommend against it if you can help it. mp3 and ogg are both lossy formats so decompressing them and recompressing them will likely lose some quality. YMMV

XMMS MP3 Support for Red Hat 8.0

Program Description:
Due to patent and licensing concerns, Red Hat Linux 8.0 does not include MP3 support. To get MP3 support back in XMMS, you simply need to install the xmms-mp3 RPM created by Guru Labs.
