.xls file corrupted recovery


dear sir

we switch recently from windows to linux where we have data . some of our .xls are not opening it says file damged or corrupted.

i do have ubuntu 10.04

could someone point out what tools to use in linux to repair.

Have files been compared with those from backup?
What application do you open them with in GNU/Linux?
What is the exact error message?
What version of mcrsft xcl was used to create the XLS files?
Are they readable on a mcrsft machine?
