Xine codecs in Ubuntu

hello all, well i have just installed Ubuntu that i got free on a dvd front cover. I am very impressed but with being used to Suse 9.2 i find it strange that i cannot have acces to certain directories. I cannot even change desktop icons etc. How can i access the system with all privelages?

also i am using totem and i have installed the codec package and put them in usr/lib/win32 but totem still does not play my mpg and wmv files, it states that there is no codec installed! how can i fix this? I wanted to check the settings for the path in totem.

previously in suse i just hit alt and S and a settings box came up allowing me to totally configure xine. This does not work in ubuntu.

Please can anyone help me?

Use Automatix. I spent hours trying to do what this can do left alone.

Agreed, Automatix should solve some issues, "automatically".

Did you work as root all the time when using SuSE??
Here are Ubuntu's basic concepts regarding root and sudo.
