XGL Trouble on Suse 10.1
 

Hello everyone

As a certified linux newbie(idiot) obviously I’m posting a cry for help. After a couple of unsuccessful transitions to linux(using installs as well as live-cd’s) I purchased SuSE 10.1 dvd and installed it on two HDD –the first one gave a Grub error after a few restarts but(I think the HDD is dying or the MBR is compromised) but on the second HDD the install was flawless.

After the initial shock to my system (a new and unfamiliar OS), my curiosity got the better of me and I tried to bite more then I can chew. I just couldn’t resist the eye-candy- experimental XGL and after installing both the nVidia driver and XGL whilst following step-by-step instruction form Novell.com and a couple of other sites I am unable to get KDE or X windows? To work. If I try to load them I get a specific Fatal Error which basically says that a couple of FontPaths could not be initialized:

Could not init font path element
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID" removing from list
FontPath “/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local” removing from list

I did find some answers on the net but none of them seem to fix anything. They even suggested that these files are no longer used so I don’t need them but I can’t boot up properly anyhow. I am aware that this is a big modification especially for a newbie like me but I really want this thing to work. Currently I’m re-installing SUSE 10.1 and I will try to install the XGL again(at least one more time before I give up:))))

Try using the current version instead. Or basically, never try to fix things which may have already been fixed for you. Current is 10.2

I've re-installed it(10.1) and again i've installed the Nvidia driver successfully. As i said before i will try to install XGL again but right after i get my internal(conexant) Winmodem going:cry: which is proving to be yet another major pain in the behind.And i didn't manipulate the FontPaths which is obviously a bug. But thanks for the advice.

Well if anyone is interested.....Finally SUCCESS!!:) After a lot of headaches i got the XGL working.it really is something, even though it's obviously very immature code and has a few glitches it was still worth all the trouble.

Now....if i only could get SuSE to find my winmodem :) and everything will be peachy:)

if you like, post what led to success, it may help other folks too.

i've been using linux a while, but also got too enticed by XGL, followed some online instructions and ended up deleting X completely. whoops.

I just thought that no one was interested - the thread wasn't receiving valid attention.

Anyhow, the first time i tried to install it i couldn't boot back to KDE( startX) as well. But i found a different website which has slightly different(methods) and it worked. But before you try anything you first have to install Nvidia driver and then you can install xgl from either online updates or DVD/CD whilst using Yast.

First use this article to install the Nvidia driver ONLY(FOLLOW JUST the "installing NVidia Kernel Module" part)
