XFree86 version check?

Hi.

I have radeon 9000 and i wish to update it's drivers for linux.

the link is:

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/l...inux&prodType=
graphic&prod=productsLINUXdriver&submit.x=9&submit.y=7&submit=GO%21

It has a script which i should have used to check my XFree86 version but when i try to execute it with "./" from a command prompt i get this message:

[root@primary downloads]# ./check.sh
=====================================================================
ATI Technologies
=====================================================================
Your possibly not running this script from the console
or maybe you simply dont have the console ownership.
Unable to determine XFree86 Version. Stopping now.

what am i doing wrong?

Thanks.

you might try "/sbin/init 3" as root in a console, then login as root, then running the script....I don't have an ATI card, so I'm not sure how the script works...but try it anyways and see what happens

EDIT//

to get out of text mode (from using /sbin/init 3) type in "/sbin/init 5"
