XFree86 removal - no GNOME/KDE access?
 

I install XFree86 4.5.0 and got it to work. I didn't realize that it would create a whole knew GUI desktop. I hate it. I thought I was just going to get a driver update to standard GNOME/KDE desktop that comes with Redhat AS3. Can I run the standard GNOME or KDE from the XFree86? How can I delete/remove XFree86 but keep the video driver for my S3 video card (which is the reason I installed it since standard Xwindow resolution on had 600x800---to big).

Let me rephrase what you did to see whether I got you right:

You manually updated XFree 4.3 that came with DeadRat to 4.5
to get support for some graphics adapter?

And that update worked, but kde and gnome won't work
anymore?

And why on earth are you trying to run X on a server platform? :}

ehh. just because. I like the GUI interface, for now anyways. Makes the setup a lot easier too. I'm not planning on installing the GUI interface on my live server.
I deleted it anyways just now. Back to old "dead-rat" GUI interface...that Free86x sucks. its just a bunch of windows. I'm still trying to fix the resolution though...can't seem to get it to 1024x768 with GNOME interface. I've tried almost everything, including editing the XFConfig file, but resolution won't stay, and goes back to 800x600. XFree86 did get me 1024x768. I' have an S3 video card incase you were wondering. Any drivers you can link my way?

should get you going with the resolution ... as for the card,
it would help to know the exact model.

that command only did what i did manually. update the XF86Config file. Resolution didn't stay, when back to 800x600 when it started up. Video card is S3 Trio64V2/GX (IBM Netfinity 5000 server). I think I need to download the S3.rpm, but I think if I do this, the prerequisits maybe large. How do you check with rpm what the prerequisits are if I download s3.rpm?

It's supposed to tell you what you require when you try
to install it ...

If you are working with a "package-based" system, like yum or rpm, then you probably want to make sure that everything you do is done through it. If you install, say, XFree86 "on your own," you're suddenly thrust into very unfamiliar territory, and furthermore, subsequent package installations and updates that you may do can easily break things because the package-designers can't anticipate what you have done. If you're going to let a distro "maintain your system configuration for you" (which is basically what a distro is for...) then you need to play the game their way.
