XFree server probs on VMware/Linux

Hi, I'm not sure if this is strictly a Linux question but anyway...

I've installed the latest VMware program on a Windows host, but I cannot get the XFree server to work with Linux virtual guests (Slackware and RH 8). Windows 98SE works fine. When I type 'startx' with the Linux distros I get an error message: fatal server error: no screens found.

The log file includes (EE) VESA (0): No matching modes and (EE) Screen (s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I wonder if this problem is related to the nvidia board.

With RH, I installed VMware Tools. This starts up a screen but that freezes and I have to power off the program and reboot.

Any help appreciated.

Using VMware 4 on Windows XP Home; Dell Dimension with 2GHz cpu; 512Mb RAM; 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200
