Question XFi sound card driver install problem on Ubuntu (32-bit)

I'm getting the annoying "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found." error when I go to the volume control thing and I don't have any sound.
So I decided to install the XFi sound card driver with the hopes that it would fix the problem
Everything was going great
I downloaded and decompressed the driver, and went to install it (by running ./installer)
But unfortunately, it keeps failing with this message:

Problem 1: existing sound card doesn't work with existing drivers.
Answer: Try running alsaconf
Code:
sudo alsaconf
If you don't have alsaconf then maybe you don't have any sound drivers at all. Check to see that you do. I recommend using Synaptic as it is easier than apt utilities.

Problem 2: new sound card drivers won't compile.
Answer: ???

Read all of the text files that came with the driver. (README, INSTALL, et. al.)

Read the config.status file that was created.

Go to the web site for this driver and read everything there.

Try to avoid installing packages from source. It's just a PITA.
