xdm missing from /etc/init.d..how do i get it back?

i need to get xdm back into my system...
when i boot up, it says that /etc/init.d/xdm and /etc/init.d/domainname are missing...
can someone tell me how to get them...
ive tried emerging (gentoo package manager) xdm...but it doesnt seem to make a difference...(although it took too short a time- so im trying it again)..
when i enter startx, it opens up to gnome (only as root though), but there is no desktop etc...but i think thats a problem with gnome and maybe not of xdm...
thats all i got for now.

would it by any chance be the same as the xdm file in /etc/X11?
