Hi,

I installed RH 7.1 text version (graphical version was hanging midway) and when it came to configuring the monitor/video card, refused my configuration.

I have tried every possible combination including the ones specified on the monitor.. When trying to install the graphic version, it tested the x server config and i even wrote it down and used it in the text version install , all to no avail...

any ideas??

well how about you tell us what hardware you have? ho ware we possibly meant to help you without some useful information?

P II , 333 Mhz, 3 Gb HDD loaded with RH 7.1
Monitor - make unknown, 14.1 "
Hor range 45-90
Ver range 70 Hz

Video card - 2 Mb ati

any good? if u need to know anything specific pl ask...

Upgrade XFree86
 

You might consider upgrading XFree86 to 4.3.0

Isnt there any way to troubleshoot this problem without upgrading??

When I type startx, the screen goes blank for a few secs and
dumps a series of errors such as:

Couldnt open RGB_DB 'blah blah'
Warning, couldnt open module pcidata
failed to load module "pcidata"
Fatal server error
Unable to load required base module

any suggestions??

It sounds like you don't have the proper modules installed. Also, if you could get the exact error messages that would help. To find those, type:

less /var/log/XFree86.0.log

You can scroll through the messages with your arrow keys. To get out of "less" type your Q key. Hope this helps.:D
