xbmc/kodi crash due to 'X server bug' 'segmentation fault'
 

Dear LinuxQuestions users,

Intro
I've got a problem with (I think) my X server, so I think it's related to my graphics driver. It plays up with graphic-intensive applications, such as Kodi and games like Risk of Rain. It feels completely random, so I hope it's not hardware related, because I'm on a laptop.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 15R SE (7520) laptop with i5 cpu and amd hd7730m dedicated gpu running Debian Jessie with Cinnamon. I use radeon (I believe the free driver is called), because GNOME crashes when I use the proprietary driver.

Concrete Evidence
The Kodi log doesn't have any useful information in it, so I won't post it. And I think the same problem causes my games' crashes.
This might help you, the applications almost always crash when I increase the volume/brightness or switch to another window, so there definitely is something wrong related to the focus, but of course I don't know if this is related to the X server problem(probably though). I'll look if they crash when the window is Windowed and switching after posting this.
Fun fact: Everytime I started a game and forgot to turn Pushbullet off, I prayed the whole time nobody would send me a message, because I'd be notified on my laptop and I would have been thrown out of the game. (This was when the X server crashed more often after it had crashed before, on the same boot, I'll test if that's still the case)

I've had quite the trouble on this laptop, I think I've re-installed Debian 5 times now due to graphic driver issues. (Off-topic: Do you guys have a hint for resetting everything graphics related w/o reinstalling?) First, it's advised to install the proprietary drivers for gaming, but then my graphical interface was gone when I rebooted, because of the bug mentioned in the intro. I still tried to get the proprietary drivers to work, by downloading the installer from the AMD site and installing fglrx, but after a lot of trying I stumbled upon someone saying that GNOME doesn't work on those drivers, so I stopped trying.

So I stayed with Radeon drivers and then his happened quite often, so I would really like your advise on this problem.

Off-topic: Does any of you know a way to boost gaming performance? (Just curious, I don't expect anything :P)

So, I have to get this assumption.

Laptops are not that good to begin with. Dell isn't any shining star. Drivers for these may or may not be stable.

Tons of web pages suggest ideas and clues for this. " open BO for returned DRI2 buffer"

Thanks you for your feedback, sorry for my big post and this late answer, the problem was solved by changing to testing in /etc/apt/sources.list, I'll mark the thread as solved.
