¿how do I configure the system to start x automatically at boot? i guess i should configure init, but don't know how to. I'd like to run gnome.

Modify the inittab file. The runlevel is prolly set at 3. Changing it to 4 will start X at boot.

in Slackware run

# xwmconfig

to set what the default X window manager to use.
